Nike’s new women’s tennis dress, “the Premier Slam,” premiered at Wimbledon recently — but not without some skeptical reactions from players assigned to wear the outfit. The dress “is a tiny babydoll with two big slits along each side. Just try returning a 120-mile-an-hour serve in that thing,” observed Gigi Douban, reporter for “Marketplace,” broadcast live nationally on NPR stations and available online via podcast.
Product Design's Erdem Selek a winner in Belgian Biennale Interieur competition
A design by Assistant Professor Erdem Selek is one of just eighteen finalists among 157 entries from twenty-nine countries in the Objects category of the 2016 Belgian Biennale Interieur competition. Some 90,000 visitors will see Selek’s work during the event October 14-23 in Kortrijk, Belgium.
UO Product Design Program celebrates ribbon-cutting at 942 Olive Street, a new innovation hub in downtown Eugene
Known as as 942 Olive Street, the UO’s new downtown innovation hub will house Product Design Program maker spaces including a design studio, a computer-assisted design lab, and a polymer lab. The hub is also home to the Regional Accelerator and Innovation Network (RAIN) and the Tyler Invention Greenhouse, which aims to leverage UO expertise in green chemistry and connect entrepreneurs and product designers. UO President Michael Schill and Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy cut the ribbon on the hub recently.
New York Design Week features work by UO product design professors
Core77 is currently featuring not one but two stories about designs that two UO Product Design Program professors are showing during New York Design Week, starting Friday, May 13, in the exhibition Furnishing Utopia. Both stories feature Studio Gorm, the design firm of Associate Professor John Arndt and Assistant Professor Wonhee Arndt.
‘Spring Storm’ returns to Lawrence Hall
Work by nearly 100 graduating senior art, digital arts, and product design students will be exhibited in Spring Storm 2016 Senior Show on Friday, May 27, from 5-8 p.m. over two floors in Lawrence Hall, 1190 Franklin Boulevard, on the UO campus. A reception for the artists will take place from 5-8 p.m. during the exhibition, which is free and open to the public.
Sports Product Design master’s program at UO in Portland approved to admit students
The Higher Education Coordinating Commission gave the final approval for a new graduate program in sports product design at their spring meeting May 12. The Portland-based master’s program in Sports Product Design will begin fall term 2016. Prospective students have until June 1 to apply.

An exhibition of art and design work by graduating students in the University of Oregon in Portland will take place from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, June 2, during the annual Open House at the White Stag Block. All are welcome to attend.
New Dean Selected for the School of Architecture and Allied Arts
Scott Coltrane, provost and senior vice president, announced today that the next dean of the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts is Christoph Lindner. He will be moving to Eugene from the Netherlands, where he is professor of media and culture at the University of Amsterdam.
UO’s Product Design Program to join RAIN innovation hub opening May 10 in downtown Eugene
Product design, sustainability, and entrepreneurship come together permanently under one roof May 10 when the Downtown Innovation Launch Lab opens in Eugene. The UO’s Product Design Program at the Lab will feature a 3-D print shop and at least one studio each term.
UO Product Design Program students target design for adaptive athletes
Students in the adaptive design studio had a specific vision and goal: to enable the USA wheelchair rugby team to compete at its highest potential using innovative products designed just for them. Refining and redesigning athletic wear for adaptive athletes is becoming a noted specialty at the UO in Portland thanks to the unique curriculum launched four years ago in the Product Design Program. The studio—Adaptive Products: Enabling Athletes with Disabilities—was first offered to fifth-year bachelor of fine arts product design students in winter 2012.
