A&AA celebrates its 100th anniversary
Join the celebration with a 100th Birthday party on Friday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m. at the south entrance of Lawrence Hall. There will be a birthday cake and all-school photo shoot. Be a part of the historic moment. Then, spend the afternoon in Lawrence Hall during the open house to visit the special exhibitions in the A&AA Library, LaVerne Krause Gallery, classrooms, and studios. See work by architecture, art, product design, landscape architecture, planning, public policy and management, and historic preservation on the second floor of Lawrence Hall.
UO hosts Design Week Portland events
UO in Portland is hosting weeklong series of interactive events, installations, and conversations showcasing the evolving state of design as part of the citywide series, Design Week Portland. Events are open to the public and especially welcoming to prospective students of all ages.
Sports product initiative moves ahead
The UO’s Lundquist College of Business will move the Oregon Executive MBA Program and sports product management initiative to a new building in Portland’s Old Town Chinatown. The new White Stag Innovation Lab is a space for teaching, product development, prototyping, and materials research. The facility has equipment ranging from 3-D printers to sewing machines for the design, innovation, and making of prototypes by students in the program.
A&AA presents 100 alumni stories
The academic year 2014-15 marks the 100th year since the School of Architecture and Allied Arts was established. As we explored the school’s archives preparing for our centennial celebrations, we found a treasure-trove of photos tracing the school’s physical changes as well as changes in faculty, leadership, and students. We will share some of those images with you in every e-news this year, beginning with this issue.
UO student wins national award for zinc-made lifting device
University of Oregon product design undergraduate student Derek Sackmann is one of just three national award winners in a design competition to develop a lifting device made from zinc, winning $2,000 for himself and $1,000 for the Product Design Program at the UO’s School of Architecture and Allied Arts. The 2014-5 Interzinc Design Challenge attracted entries from schools across the United States and Canada. The annual competition, which requires zinc for the main component, challenged students this year to develop a lifting device designed to be produced in die-cast zinc.
Student’s winning shoe design slated for production
A shoe designed by Product Design Program student Stefan Cristobal will be produced for shoe brand Android Homme in 2015 after Cristobal won the 2014 Pensole World Sneaker Championship.
New master’s degrees in sports products underway
Faculty members in business and product design are crafting new master’s degree programs. The Sports Products Initiative will offer two new degrees. The first to launch in fall 2015 will be sports product management and will be offered by the Lundquist College of Business.
The World Sneaker Championship final presentation day is this Friday
This Friday in Portland is the final presentation day of the World Sneaker Championship at Pensole. It featurs 30 hand-selected design students from 16 different countries around the world, including a recent 2014 Product Design graduate, Stefán Cristobal, the only member from Oregon that is participating. The World Sneaker Championship will be a featured story on Sports Illustrated next week.

Oregon Public Broadcasting featured Product Design Program Assistant Professor Trygve Faste on Saturday’s OPB "State of Wonder" radio program. Faste spoke with host April Baer about the intersection of studio art and design. Faste’s comments on OPB previewed a speech he’ll deliver this week at the international Industrial Designers Society of America conference in Austin, Texas.
